The book is written as a reflection by the author on his experience after the dawn of democracy. In his quest as he reflects, asks questions as to whether the democracy lived is what was expected and promised. When he thinks about the price paid by our ancestors for the people to enjoy of democracy, he argues through his reflections on the realities of life as lived by the majority of South Africans as worse off compared to the days before the democracy.

He agrees that there are many positives in terms of freedom of movement not of economy. However; he feels that we are worse off economically. More people are unemployed , economy is still in the control of a few minority, crime is at an all-time high, no access to land , and many other social challenges that should have been addressed 30 years post democracy.

Most young people complete their studies only to be unemployed and end up trapped in the drug world. Until there is economic freedom, nothing will change to make the lives of the previously marginalised better. The sad part, though the marginalised remain impoverished , they still vote the same party that has failed to change their lives in power. The big question is, “WHY”?
